I’m delighted to be exhibiting in “Vespid” curated

I’m delighted to be exhibiting in “Vespid” curated by Tom Grey and Louisa Crispin at Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope Gallery until 29th August.

Wasps are not my usual subject, so, after some research, I found a link to stones, which is my current interest and was excited to find an image of the oldest wasp fossil discovered to date. This is a wasp from 239 million years ago! Absolutely awesome.

The dinosaur footprints on Bexhill beach, which I have been excited to tread in the footsteps of, are a mere 130 million years old.

The painting was built up in layers, sanding back and responding to the surface of the board, thinking about the passage of time. Although my painting is 40cm square, the actual fossil is tiny at around 2.8mm.

I took my inspiration from an article I found online by SWI, the Swiss News platform. The image with the article was used as reference for my painting.

It was a delight to have Roger Lee and Victoria Granville visit my studio for the Portrait of the Artists exhibition currently showing at Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope Gallery.

Here’s one which didn’t make it into the exhibition but I think shows a joyful moment in my studio.

The exhibition is beautifully curated and gives a fascinating insight into the art practices of 29 artists.

Such a joy to find my favourite sculpture in the Courtauld Gallery yesterday!

I first saw this in Tate St Ives over 20 years ago and always enjoy the opportunity to see it.

She has perfectly captured the moment of tension as a wave reaches the top of its curve and is about to cascade over. Powerful yet gentle.

A moment of exquisite balance.

Having spent time standing in the sea watching the waves over the last few days, my experience of seeing this again was visceral. Such is the power of art to touch the soul.

It was a wonderful Private View last night, and I am extremely proud to be part of this insightful project by photographer Roger Lee, Victoria Granville and Lesley Lee.

A huge thank you to all of you and to Sue and Ros at Kaleidoscope Gallery.

What does it mean to be an artist?

“The original intention of this exhibition entitled Portrait of the Artists was simply to produce a series of photographs of artists in the places in which they work. But this objective was gradually superseded as the texts written by the participating artists revealed a range of profound observations on what it means to be an artist.” Roger Lee 2026

The exhibition is beautifully presented with the photographs and texts together (design by Victoria Granville) alongside a piece of work by each artist.

My studio is the place where magic happens. As I step over the threshold a world full of possibilities awaits. A door mat states this is “The Studio”. I put on my paint-stained apron and feel like an artist.

There’s also my music, which is usually calm. A large white window blind diffuses the light and contains the space. The studio faces east so morning sunshine can stream in. When it does, it bounces off the mirrored cupboard doors opposite and the studio is bathed in light.

I like things to be orderly. When painting, I need to enter the creative space in my head untroubled with “Where is that tube of Prussian Blue?”

Painting can be full of energy or slow and quiet. Sometimes I can’t paint at all. It’s important to allow time for reflection and I’ve recently discovered the usefulness of journaling and building sketchbooks of small studies. These are invaluable tools and records of my processes, inspiration and thoughts.

For me painting is about stepping out of the “every day mode” and allowing intuition to flow.
